Skin
the largest organ of the body.
It is made up of outer epidermis
and inner dermis. The epidermis
has a layer of cells like keratinocytes
and melanocytes. The dermis
contains blood vessels, sebaceous
or oil glands, sweat glands,
nerves etc., all of which are
bound together by elastin and
collagen fibers. Skin protects
us from outer environmental
pollutants by forming a barrier
layer. It helps perceiving stimulants
such as touch, heat, cold, pain
and regulates body temperature.
Factors like pollution, sun
rays, stress, irregular food
habits,
inadequate
sleep etc. contribute skin imperfections.
One has to follow a very simple regime
for skin care.
1.
A
well balanced regular diet
along with adequate amount
of water is needed. Avoid
junk foods, too much of starvation
in the form of dieting and
eating at odd irregular hours.
2.
About
30 minute of aerobics, walking,
jogging or cycling at least
five times a week is essential
for healthy skin.
3.
UVA and UVB rays could be
harsh on the skin and cause
photo damages in the form
of increased pigmentation,
freckles, premature ageing
and even skin cancers. For
normal to dry skin use a sunscreen
with an SPF of 15 at least
20 minutes before sun exposure
and for oily skin use an umbrella
or a wide brimmed hat for
sun protection.
4.
The
surface of the skin contains
oil, dead cells, sweat, grime,
dirt, grease and pollutants.
If these are not removed,
the skin looks dull and flaky.
The skin should be washed
at least twice a day with
warm mater.
5.
Always
be gentle on your skin. Do
not use harsh cosmetics, if
you have a skin problem; seek
doctors’ advice from
Berkowits.
