Exfoliation may seem like a luxury but actually, it is imperative to exfoliate the skin on a regular basis. It removes excess dead skin cells and makes way for newer, fresher looking skin. We may cleanse, tone, moisturize and slather on sunscreen on a regular basis but if we aren't exfoliating everything goes in vain and our skin isn't as healthy as it can possibly be.
What is exfoliation?
Exfoliation means removing dead cells from the skin by scrubbing them off. Scrubs can be of two types: One can be a semi-abrasive cosmetic lotion and the other type could be in the form of a chemical. A chemical peel can help in dissolving the dead cells from the skin without scrubbing the skin.
Why is exfoliation important?
As we become older our body slows down the process of regeneration which primarily means that it decreases the pace of shedding of old cells and generation of newer cells. Because of this slow down the old dead cells starts piling up on the skin which causes the skin to look dull, pigmented and flaky. Also, these dead cells clog the pores resulting in acne and blemishes. Exfoliation helps in eliminating this layer of dead cells, even outs the skin tone and gives way to the newer skin.
Risks and Precautions
Exfoliating the skin excessively can cause more damage than good. If we exfoliate often we remove the skin prematurely. Over-exfoliation can also lead to inflammation and make the skin prone to infections. Use anti-inflammatory or soothing products after exfoliation to protect the skin from damage.
On dry or cracked parts of the body such as elbows, feet or legs, one can exfoliate often as the skin is thicker on these parts.
One should consult a skin expert to know how often they should be exfoliating as there is no definitive answer to this.
