Platelet Rich Plasma or PRP for hair restoration is an advanced technique that uses your own blood to stimulate new hair growth and for face rejuvenation. PRPs strong regenerative ability is a promising non-surgical solution that can help regrow areas of thinning hair, add natural fullness to your scalp, combat the effects of hair loss and help you achieve long-lasting hair restoration results.
Dr. Anupriya Goel, medical director at Berkowits Hair and Skin Clinic gives her insights into the PRP treatment. According to Dr. Anupriya, PRP therapy is a very effective procedure for the growth of hair and for face rejuvenation. In this procedure, a small quantity of the patient's own blood is taken, and the plasma is separated from the blood. This plasma, which is rich in platelets contains various growth factors and cytokines that help in the regeneration and repair of tissues. It also increases blood circulation which is very helpful in the growth of hair and the rejuvenation of the face. Not only this, it also helps in reversing the key signs of ageing, and also helps in repairing sun-damaged skin. PRP can also be combined with a number of treatments for both hair and skin.
For hair treatments, PRP can be combined with a Low-Level Laser therapy (LLLT), with Mesotherapy or Dermaroller or with other oral and topical medications. It can also be given after a hair transplant to maintain and increase its effects.
For skin treatments, PRP can be combined with other treatments like Mesotherapy, Dermaroller, Dermal fillers, and with Chemical Peels as well.
How is the PRP procedure performed?
PRP is performed by taking about 10-15 ml of the patient’s blood sample, which is centrifuged to separate plasma from the blood. This plasma is then taken in several micro needle syringes, similar to insulin syringes, and injected in the scalp as well as the face. It’s a relatively painless procedure as the patient is first anaesthetized with a numbing cream. A numbing injection is then given to the patient to minimize the pain. The patient might experience redness and swelling after the procedure which subsides within 24 to 48 hours. A minimum of 3 to 4 sessions of PRP is required both for hair and skin treatments. Each session is performed within a gap of 1 to 2 months and the results are visible in 3 to 6 months. Hence, PRP is highly effective as a standalone treatment, both for hair and skin. It can be used for hair growth for skin rejuvenation, for acne scar treatment, for removal of wrinkles, and in attaining facial glow.
