Side effects of hair transplant

Hair Shedding. This is quite common after the procedure. The transplanted roots remain and the shaft falls. This process known as shedding takes about 2-3 weeks. After this, new hair grows from the root which takes another 3-4 months.

So don’t worry if some hair begins to fall. They will soon grow back. Only in rare patients the normal hair fall but they grow back in 3 to 4 months too.

Pain. This is usually a surgical procedure where anesthesia is provided. Only in a few cases there is discomfort and pain. This pain can be eased with painkillers like Paracetamol.

Bleeding. There are minor cuts that are made during the procedure. Bleeding is minimal and can be stopped by applying pressure. Patients taking blood thinners like Aspirin and Clopidogrel or have a bleeding disorder must inform the doctor beforehand.

Itching. This is a common side effect and lasts for only a few days. A spray is given to apply on the scalp. After the first week, the scalp must be washed gently with a mild shampoo.

Infection. Post surgical infections are prevented by giving post operative antibiotics. Usually there are no serious infections of the scalp.

Swelling. Areas around the forehead and eyes may swell temporarily. It lasts for a few eyes. This is commonly seen. Keeping head elevated and cold compress reduces the swelling quickly.

Scarring. The wounds after transplant heal leaving minor scars. These scars are very small and remain hidden.

Numbness. This is present in most cases in the donor area and lasts for about 18 weeks.

Cysts. Small cluster of cysts can erupt and rarely it is seen in aggravated form. They disappear in a few weeks.

Hiccups. This is rarely seen and resolves in a few weeks.
