Hair loss and balding can be distressing for us. Good news! There are solutions to prevent hair loss, balding and thinning of hair.
Hair loss can be due to genetic inheritance. Daily exposure of our hair to hair dryers, hair products, hot curlers, hair straightening products and hair dyes can cause detrimental damage to your hair. Stress, medications, infections and diseases are also linked to hair loss.
There are options to prevent hair loss:
Hair Loss Prevention Option 1: Home Treatment
There are several hair loss solutions for home:
Take a break. Stop using those damaging products. High heat from the hair dryers and hair curlers is harmful as well. Give your hair a break from them and let them grow naturally.
Hot oil massages. Take hot coconut or almond oil. Use your fingertips to massage your scalp gently. Allow a few hours for the oil to reach the hair roots and form a protective layer on the hair strands. Do this at least twice a week.
Gentle hair brushing. Use a wide toothed comb to avoid pulling out of hair. Gently comb long hair from the scalp to the tip. The scalp produces it's own natural oils which distribute to the entire length of hair strands. Wet hair is fragile and combing can lead to breakage.
Let your hair loose: Avoid tying you hair tightly. Keep it open as much as possible.
De-stress. Our daily mental stress is linked to hair loss. Exercise, eat healthy food and meditate to keep your mind calm.
Hairstyles: Long haired people can change their hair styles to cover balding spots. This is however not a proper solution.
Hair products: The damaging products must be identified and it's use must be stopped. Use mild shampoos to wash hair and know best hair loss products with Hairwits
Scalp concealers: They hide the balding spots and make the hair appear fuller. This effect remains only till the next time the hair is washed.
Hair piece: Large balding areas can be concealed with human or synthetic hair pieces. The hairpiece is attached to the head with glue, metal clips or tape. Avoid hair weaving as it can cause further hair damage.
Laser phototherapy combs: These special combs are designed for home use. Low levels of light stimulates the scalp to grow hair. This Laser comb improve circulation to their follicles and promoting hair growth as well.
Skin cancer prevention: People with large bald spots must apply sunscreen with minimum of SPF 30.
Hair Loss Prevention Option 2: Medications
Medicines for hair loss help regrow hair and must be prescribed by a hair specialist. Regular application is necessary for the treatment to be effective. However the Hairloss may reappear on stopping the drugs.
Inherited hair loss can be treated with Minoxidil and Finasteride:
Minoxidil is sprayed or rubbed into the scalp.
Finasteride is taken as a pill daily.
Alopecia areata is treated with mainly steroids:
Corticosteroids injections are given into the scalp every 4 to 6 weeks. This is a common treatment used for patchy hair loss.
Corticosteroid ointments or creams can be applied on bald spits. They are available with or without Minoxidil.
Corticosteroid tablets are also useful. They are often avoided because of the long term side effects.
Contact immunotherapy is applied to trigger an immune response to stimulate hair growth.
Hair Loss Prevention Option 3: Surgery
Surgery provides a permanent hair loss solution to cover balding spots. It has surgical risks and may not be 100% successful. They are often expensive alternatives.
Hair transplant surgery: Small areas of hair and scalp known as grafts are removed from normal areas of scalp and placed on the balding areas. The graft can be of single strand of hair or upto 30 hairs at a time.
Scalp reduction: Small bald patches of scalp are removed and these areas are covered by stretching normal haired scalp.
Scalp flaps: Large areas of normal scalp from side and back of head are detached and rotated to cover the balder areas. This technique has more complications like bleeding and scarring.
